People-Centric Leadership: Becoming a Leader Others Want to Follow

Leadership is one of my favorite topics. It is such a privilege to have the opportunity to lead others, as you can multiply your impact. To become a transformational leader, you must have a people-centric approach. Here are four keys to accomplishing this.

Invest in your people – get to know them as people and professionals. People must know that you genuinely care. This comes through human interactions such as starting with small talk instead of always jumping into business. If they are passionate about something (i.e., hobby, family, etc.) then ask occasionally. Finally, acknowledge things like big events in their family life, their work anniversary, and accomplishments.

Flex your leadership and communication style to the individual when possible. It starts with asking questions, so you know what each person ideally wants and needs.

  • What do you need from me as your leader?
  • How do you best learn?
  • What motivates you and why?
  • How do you like to receive feedback?

Show that you value them. Here are some ways you can do this. Express your appreciation. Be deep enough in their business that you can understand what they are doing and can coach them effectively. Make time for them. Help them prepare and give them frequent feedback. Set clear goals, ensure they have a plan to achieve them, and provide accountability. Listen and support them.

Be clear about what they can expect from you. In my leadership courses and with coaching clients, I walk through an exercise to create their leadership principles. This enables leaders to be clear about who they are and how they are committed to lead. It is a set of guidelines for you to check yourself against, and it empowers your team to hold you accountable to who you say you will be.

In Dr. Henry Cloud‘s book, Integrity, he talks about how leaders leave a “wake” behind them in both their results and their relationships. What will your legacy be as a leader?
